In today’s very competitive business environment, it is imperative that organizations choose the most appropriate and effective overhead rate, particularly, because it guides management in its tasks of product pricing, job costing, and budgeting. Businesses can use the single company-wide method or can opt for the departmental method. Auerbach Enterprises manufactures air conditioners for many makes of both automobiles and trucks. The two main products are MaxiFlow and Alaska. Currently, the company uses a company-wide predetermined overhead (OH) rate but is considering using departmental OH rates in the upcoming year. Company-wide OH rates allocate expenses across the entire enterprise. This rate is figured by dividing the total cost of overhead by cost drivers common throughout each department. According to Schneider (2012), â€Å"Department OH rates are calculated for each separate department by dividing the total department overhead budgeted by the budgeted amount of comm on cost drivers within the department† (p. 3.3). Moreover, Auerbach Enterprises is trying to make a determination as to whether it would be more appropriate to use the company-wide predetermined overhead rates, or whether it would be more appropriate to switch to using departmental overhead rates. As such, this paper will be making calculations to determine the most appropriate overhead costing rate method; according to Brunton (1998): The easiest method is to apply the plant-wide, or blanket rate. Parts are valued at a proportionate share of indirect costs according to some predetermined base. One disadvantage of this method rises when production processes differ significantly for different parts.  Parts processed in departments that have low overhead expenses are valued and priced proportionately the same as parts produced in departments with high overhead expenses. A second disadvantage is that all parts do not necessarily carry a portion of indirect cost as part of their value because one base is used in the allocation process (p. 22). Further, a determination should be made concerning whether one product is affected more than the other by using departmental rates rather than a company-wide rate. Why or why not? Indeed, the ability to remain competitive lies in how well a company implements cost-cutting solutions within its organization. Accordingly, based on the total unit cost, MaxiFlow appears to be affected more than Alaska by using the departmental rate. Using a company-wide OH rate is better suited for an enterprise that manufactures a single product. Since Auerbach has multiple departments and manufacturing sections, a more accurate overhead rate can be calculated using the departmental OH rate method. Additionally, it is very interesting, and no less compelling that company such as this uses machine hours instead of direct labor as the cost driver to assign overhead cost; this, in and of itself strongly suggest that it is a company which the majority of its manufacturing is done by machine and not by physical labor. This is expressed by Novin (1992) in the following excerpt; he states: Direct labor no longer may be the most effective base for applying factory overhead costs to various jobs and products. With today’s highly automated systems, labor-related costs constitute only a small portion of total manufacturing costs, and overhead costs now correlate more with factors such as machine hours and material quantities. Accordingly, many companies are beginning to identity application bases that better reflect the causes of overhead costs in their unique manufacturing environments (p. 40). Indeed, regardless of whether a company opts to use the company-wide overhead rate, or the departmental overhead rates, the effectiveness of those various systems, to a large extent, depends on the type of organization that utilizes them. This is expressed by Boer & Jeter (1993), wherein they state, â€Å"†¦manufacturing cost structures have been changing slowly over time, but sufficient variation across industries exists in the extent and nature of the changes to suggest that no single approach to structuring cost accounting systems is likely to be optimal for all industrial organizations or sectors† (pp. 5, 61). In  conclusion, Auerbach compiled planning information in an attempt to determine if it would be beneficial to change from a company-wide predetermined overhead rate to a departmental overhead rate. This is important because choosing the most appropriate rate helps management in the budgeting, job costing, and product pricing process. Analysis of Saab

Saab is an acronym for Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget. The company was founded in Sweden in 1937 for the purpose of building aircrafts for the Swedish Air Force during World War II. After the war ended, Saab entered the automobile industry and relocated to Trollhattan where they are still located today. Saab is well diversified producing products in five different business units: Aeronautics, Dynamics, Electronic Defense Systems, Security and Defense Solutions, and Support and Services. Saab was acquired by General Motors in 1990 who then sold the rights to Spyker Cars in 2010. Target Consumer: Saabs’ target market is labeled as â€Å"postmodern individualists† who create their own style rather than following others. These individuals are considered well-educated and usually live in urban areas. They seek a car that is simple, delivers quality performance, and provides outstanding safety. The car driving experience is built around the idea of providing pleasure for the driver. Saab’s main markets include Sweden, United States, and the United Kingdom. Competitors: Saab competes with many well established brands and companies in each of its main markets. The Volkswagen Group which owns; Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, SEAT, Skoda, and of course Volkswagen is one of Saabs’ numerous competitors. They also compete with BMW, Volvo and Daimler AG who makes Mercedes. Saab has been struggling to revive slumping sales in the US market for some time. Their lack of ability to create a distinctive design and finding the right price tags are some of the reasons they have found it difficult to compete as a luxury brand. Industry Analysis: The automobile industry as a whole has taken a hit since the global economic downturn and has created an uphill battle for Saab ever since. In 2008 the Swedish government had to provide financial assistance to both Volvo and Saab due to the automotive industry crisis. These events have taken a toll on Saabs output and performance within the industry. In February of 2009 General Motors, Saabs owners at the time warned that Saab may fail should the Swedish government not intervene again. Struggling to maintain a stable financial intake Saab was forced to close down its manufacturing plants and again seek financial aid outside of the company. Saab’s capacity to preserve a stable imagine as it moves forward is critical to future success in the competitive automobile industry. SWOT Analysis: After taking a look at Saab’s strengths, one of its strongest is its ability to innovate. As stated earlier, Saab offers a variety of products ranging from military defense, aeronautics, civil security products, and automobiles. Saab has demonstrated several first mover advantages throughout its history. For instance, Saab created the first car standardized with fitted seatbelts in 1958. More recently, they introduced cross-wheel drive in 2008. In general, Saab emphasizes safety in the production of its cars, satisfying its customers by creating a safe vehicle is one of Saabs key strengths. A few other strengths include brand loyalty as well as foreign brand strength. With strengths also comes weaknesses, and one of Saabs biggest weakness is its small market share. Its automobiles are only marketed in select countries and to a certain consumer. This is probably a key reason why the company has been losing sales, causing them to recently halt production due to insufficient funds owed to their suppliers. This has been leading to work stoppages along with Saab missing sales targets. This can drastically hurt the company’s brand image and further damage sales in the future. Saab is also caught in the middle of prices with competition. Majority of its cars are not priced towards the lower or upper bounds in the market. Forecasting Saab’s opportunities in the future all does not seem to be lost. If Saab is able to establish a form of credit and investment from outside resources, the company can get back on its feet. Saab’s main focus now should be to move into new markets and attempt to capture market share. With recent news and talks of securing money from Chinese investors, Saab should act on this opportunity. By partnering with the Chinese, Saab will have access to the Asian markets which can potentially generate new market share and sales. They also have the potential to gain manufacturing innovations which can lead to cost savings as well as technological advancements. Saab is still a company with many threats however. If Saab is unable to capture market share, it will be difficult for them to recover. Key Issues: As mentioned earlier, Saab Automobile was forced to stop making cars because of a dispute with their suppliers about payment. The vice president of global sales at Saab hoped the issue would be resolved within a week so the carmaker could get the needed parts and resume vehicle assembly. This incident was the result of Saab’s component makers halting deliveries and demanding payment. Saab did not have the cash to pay their suppliers, so a loan was needed. It is important for a manufacturing company to maintain a good relationship with their suppliers. Saab was unable to do that and it hurt the production of their cars. Innovation is also important for Saab, they should continue to innovate new safety features and improve the performance of their vehicles to achieve a competitive edge. Recommendations: Since the major issue for Saab right now is lack of liquidity, the first recommendation for Saab is to get more funding from the European Investment Bank. Bringing a new Russian bank could be a good idea and building trust to enhance investment. Unfortunately, Saab’s financial plan is quite dependent on the government policy which makes it more difficult for Saab to be flexible in its decision making. It is very important that Saab maintains better communication and trust with its suppliers to increase a good reputation and a basis to demand longer deadlines for payment. In addition, there might be some operational issues or supply chain unbalance, which could be the cause of lack of leadership. This could be the result of their illiquidity. In this case, this is now high time for Saab to actually look over its operation and whole procurement process, apply lean manufacturing, and figure out the root of the problem.

We Can Actually Use First Aid We cannot predict anything, we can never tell when an accident will occur, but there is one thing for sure, we can prevent added injury or pain if we know how to demonstrate first aid. Last January 15, 2013, we have our guest speaker in the class to discuss and help us with the basic knowledge about first aid. The simple discussion helped us learn the importance of first aid and how we can use it in the future. Saving a personà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s life is the most important thing why we should learn first aid. When there is an accident and there is no one there to help out the victim, you can perform the first aid to alleviate the suffering and prevent the victim from having serious damages when treatment or help is not yet present. First aid also serves as the bridge that fills the gap between the sick and the physician so we should be the middle man who will secure that the victim would feel less in pain and would check his/her condition by observing the blood pressure, breathing, pulse rate and temperature. Every second or every minute counts after the victim have encountered the accident thatà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s why he/she should be attended in the quickest time as possible. We can actually use first aid in many simple ways and by performing the first aid properly. And as medical biology students and maybe future doctors, it is very useful for us to know the basics of first aid because we can definitely use it in case of emergencies to give a victim some medical attention. So for us to practice how we can use first aid, our guest speaker and our professor site us a situation wherein a boy was injured in his arm after he fell on the ground when heà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s trying to change the light bulb. Given that we have some materials like: handkerchief, cardboard, ruler, belt, strips of cloth and masking tape at first we donà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½t really know how we should start and how we should do it but then we properly managed it. We tried to wrap the handkerchief around our classmatesà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ arm but its length was a bit short so we decided to use the belt and replace the handkerchief then we put some bandage around his arm and use the ruler and the cardboard to straight his arm and whoala! we actually performed a first aid. Our group didnà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½t win but our guest praised us because our group was resourceful to use a belt instead of the handkerchief. Our English professor asked us to write an essay about our experiences during the first aid lecture and the activity of using household items to give first aid to the injured as instructed by our professor. First aid is a must for us students of Medical Biology because it is related to our course and our future profession as Medical doctors. And because this essay is a requirement to pass this subject, we are obliged to do it. The first thing that we did is the first aid lecture. Our professor invited a guest speaker to talk about first aid. This lecture covers the definition of first aid, its objectives, doà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s and dontà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s of doing first aid, some tricks in saving oneà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s life and the ABCà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s of life. This lecture can come in handy when someone needs help. Honestly, the lecture is informative but also boring. The speakerà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s approach in lecturing was so boring that I felt that everyone in the classroom is half dead while listening to the speaker. Good thing that I managed to stay awake while listening to the lecture. After our lecture, our professor challenges us to put our skills to the test. He first asked one of the members from each group to be the à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½main actor/actressà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½. I doubt that statement because I knew that this person will be subjected to slight discomfort and probably humiliation while doing the activity. Thinking that way, I decided that I donà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½t want to do it. But my fellow members forced me to volunteer. Someone has to do it right? So I ended up doing it. After that, our professor gave this situation: Supposedly I fell down from the chair while changing the light bulb with my left arm first. I winced in pain and my left arm maybe broken. So using the materials provided, my fellow members will give me first aid treatment for 10 minutes. And we started this chaos. They wrapped my left arm with bandage; straighten my left arm with a ruler and a stick, serving as a support for it to immobilize my arm. Then they use a leather belt that hangs from my neck to the injured arm as a support. I felt like I was a dress-up doll and twisted in awkward positions while giving me the first aid treatment. So much for top-notch care and gentle movements. It was, for me, an awkward moment. Then, the presentation of the output comes. The four main actors goes in front of the class and shows off what they have done. As I look to the other people, one thingà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s for sure, we all look like fools. Then the guest speaker judged the output. But in the e nd, we lost. But we still gain experience and a few laughs while doing the activity. In life we really not know what are going to be happening. Because in life we cannot predict the future only one Man can, what if we are riding in a plane then suddenly a one passenger experience difficulty in breathing or something? You are in a park with your brother or sister then a child fell on the monkey bar and broke his or her arm? What are you going to do? These are the example of the many situations why first à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ aid is important and why should we learn how to practice it. Weà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve lectured about first Aid in our class; and in that lecture we learned why First Aid is important in our daily living. First Aid is important in several reasons; it serves us the temporary treatment to a certain victim. It is done to make the situation lighter or to help the victim feel less pain and suffering by knowing his or her vital signs to his or her heartbeat First aid also helps to prevent further danger to come and risks of the life span of the victim and more importantly with a simple hand you will learn how to save someone life. As Medical Biology students and a soon to be doctors we should know how to practice first aid. On the activity weà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve done there is a certain situation and we should practice first aid in one of our group mates with the materials we have assigned to brinkg like ruler, piece of cloth, masking tape and scissors. Skin Cancer What is it and how to prevent it Skin cancer is the most prevalent of all cancers. There are three types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. In this presentation I plan to discuss a little about each of these cases as well as tell ways to prevent and treat them. The first most common skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma. This cancer develops in the basal or bottom layer of the epidermis, which is the top layer of the skin. The cause of this cancer is a gene called patched or PTC, which helps to control cell growth and development. If this gene is missing, defective, or damaged by ultra violet radiation, unrestrained cell proliferation may result. Basal cell carcinoma usually appears as a small, fleshy bump, which most often appears on the head, neck, or hands. This type of cancer seldom occurs in African Americans, but they are the most common skin cancers found in fair- skinned persons. These tumors don’t spread quickly. It could take months or years for one to grow to a diameter of one- half inch. If untreated the cancer could begin to bleed, crust over, heal and then the cycle repeats. The second most common skin cancer is squamous cell carcinoma. This cancer develops in the upper layers of the epidermis. Although this cancer is more aggressive than basal cell cancer, it is still relatively slow growing and is more likely to spread to other locations, including internal organs. Squamous cell cancer is usually found on the rim of the ear, the face, the lips and mouth. However, the disease is usually painless, but may become painful with the development of ulcers that do not heal. This cancer often originates from sun- damaged skin and usually begins at age 50. When found and treated early as well as properly, the cure rate by dermatological surgery is 95%. The third and most deadly skin cancer is malignant melanoma. This cancer develops in the pigment cells, which are found throughout the basal layer. Although melanoma is almost always curable when detected early, it is responsible for three quarters of all skin cancer deaths. About 48,000 new cases are diagnosed annually in the United States. About 7,700 people die from this disease each year. Melanoma may suddenly appear without warning but it may also begin in or near a mole or other dark spots in the skin.
